7 Days Umbwe Route

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

7 Days Umbwe Route

per person

The Umbwe route has a well-deserved reputation of being the most challenging route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Due to the fast ascent to high altitude, this route does not provide the necessary stages for acclimatization. Although the number of people on this trail is very low, the chances of success are also low. Umbwe is considered to be a very difficult, taxing route – one that should only be attempted by strong hikers who are confident in their ability to acclimatize quickly to altitude.

Approaching from the south, the Umbwe route is a short, steep, and direct climb. After reaching Barranco Camp, the trail turns east and traverses underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route.

We offer Umbwe as a six or seven-day private climb. The seven-day variation adds an acclimatization day on day three at Barranco Camp

The trail ascends sharply on a forestry track that winds up the dense rainforest. The path narrows and steepens as we climb the ridge between two rivers surrounded by huge trees. Umbwe Camp is perched between trees and thick undergrowth.

Cave Bivouac (2,850m/9,350ft) to Barranco Camp (3,950M/12,960ft)
The first section of the trail continues following the ridge. After leaving the forest, continue through open moorlands until reaching Barranco Camp. Barranco is generally regarded as the most scenic campsite on the Umbwe Trail as it’s surrounded by giant senecios and lobelias. As Barranco is in a valley, the sun rises later than at the other camps.
  • Total Elevation Gain: 1,100 meters, 3,610 feet
  • Hiking time: 5 to 7 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

5
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Leave Barranco Camp after breakfast for Karanga Valley. The day begins with a 1.5-hour scramble up the Barranco Wall. This is the hardest part of the day and in some places, you may have to use your hands to aid your climb. After reaching the top, hike through fairly level terrain before making a short but steep descent into the green Karanga River Valley.
  • Elevation Gain: 250 meters, 820 feet
  • Distance: 7 Kilometers
  • Hiking time: 3 to 5 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included
6
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, begin the hike to Barafu Camp. On the way to Barafu, view several of Kibo’s glaciers as well as the junction that connects the descent route, Mweka, with the Machame trail. On day four, hike by the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers. Although the trail to Barafu passes through an alpine desert with little vegetation, Barafu Camp offers stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Try to sleep after finishing dinner as you will wake before midnight for your summit hike.
  • Elevation Gain: 400 meters, 1,320 feet
  • Hiking time: 3 to 5 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included
7
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, down to Mweka Camp
Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Hike by the light of your headlamp for the next six hours. The ascent to the crater rim is the most challenging part of the entire trek. The trail is very steep until you reach the crater rim at Stella Point.
The hike from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes the hike long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately one hour. Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Mweka Camp. On the way down from Uhuru, enjoy views of the mountain, crater, clouds, and glaciers. At Barafu Camp, eat breakfast and take a short break. You still have another three to five hours to go before reaching Mweka Camp.
  • Elevation Gain: 1,295 meters, 4,240 feet
  • Elevation Loss: 2,795 meters, 9,170 feet

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

TIPS FOR CREW

Important Tips Informations

Tips will vary depending on the length and complexity of the trip, the number of staff on the trip, and the number of clients on the trip. Generally, groups like to meet together before the end of the trek to discuss how much they would like to tip each staff member based on their individual trek experience. Tips should not be dependent on whether you summit or not, but rather whether your guides and porters were professional and had your best interests in mind. If your guides and porter have not met your expectations, please inform us immediately after descending. If they press you for a tip during the trek, inform us as well, as this is against company policy. You can use US Dollars, Euros, TZ shillings, or a combination of these.

EACH CLIENT SHOULD EXPECT TO TIP BETWEEN US $250 – US $300 FOR THE ENTIRE CLIMB.

Depending on the number of clients but usually, you will have:  Chief Guide, Assistance Guide, Cooker, and Porters.
Additional Notes:
If you have booked your climb through an agent that gave you different information, please tip according to the agent’s information. To avoid confusion, on the first day of your climb, please confirm with your guide the correct total number of staff that you or your group have. Don’t pay tips tip any other persons.
