6 Days Umbwe Route

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

6 Days Umbwe Route

per person

The Umbwe route has a well-deserved reputation of being the most challenging route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Due to the fast ascent to high altitude, this route does not provide the necessary stages for acclimatization and therefore the traffic on the Umbwe route is very low. You will not have to share the phenomenal vistas with a crowd of people. Approaching from the South, the Umbwe route leads you through the cloud forests of Kilimanjaro and wide tall grass landscapes. The Umbwe route is a short, steep, and direct climb with the most incredible vistas at the Barranco Camp with its beautiful lobelias and giant senecios.

The way up to the Barranco Wall is steep and requires you to use your hands. The trail turns East and crosses underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern ice field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route.

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), we will continue hiking toward the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. We will head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point, we will stop for a short rest and be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit.
From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your one-hour ascent to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa! From the summit, we begin our descent by continuing straight down to the Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You may want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. We will arrive at Mweka Camp and enjoy our last evening on the mountain.

From the gate, continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka Gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 30 minutes).

TIPS FOR CREW

Important Tips Informations

Tips will vary depending on the length and complexity of the trip, the number of staff on the trip, and the number of clients on the trip. Generally, groups like to meet together before the end of the trek to discuss how much they would like to tip each staff member based on their individual trek experience. Tips should not be dependent on whether you summit or not, but rather whether your guides and porters were professional and had your best interests in mind. If your guides and porter have not met your expectations, please inform us immediately after descending. If they press you for a tip during the trek, inform us as well, as this is against company policy. You can use US Dollars, Euros, TZ shillings, or a combination of these.

EACH CLIENT SHOULD EXPECT TO TIP BETWEEN US $250 – US $300 FOR THE ENTIRE CLIMB.

Depending on the number of clients but usually, you will have:  Chief Guide, Assistance Guide, Cooker, and Porters.
Additional Notes:
If you have booked your climb through an agent that gave you different information, please tip according to the agent’s information. To avoid confusion, on the first day of your climb, please confirm with your guide the correct total number of staff that you or your group have. Don’t pay tips tip any other persons.
